The lighthouse caretaker volunteer position often involves physically strenuous activities including standing for long periods of time, walking, climbing stairs, cleaning, sidewalk snow removal, boardwalk sand removal, mowing, weeding, and moving boxes of supplies.Most of the interaction with visitors involves interpreting the lighthouse and Great Lakes maritime history and answering questions.
This position involves interacting with numerous visitors from every walk of life on a daily basis.Due to the heavy workload and the challenging nature of the work, couples are encouraged to apply.Upon successful completion of one year, an additional year may be negotiated. A minimum one-year commitment is expected.The “Soo,” as it is referred to, is a full-service community with schools, a hospital and a university. Marie, Michigan, with a population of 14,500. The Point Iroquois Lighthouse is approximately 33 miles from the city of Sault Ste. The population of Brimley is approximately 1,200. This Great Lake lighthouse receives approximately 45,000 visitors annually and is located just outside the community of Brimley, Michigan.
